Exploring the Legend of Claude 5: Hype or Reality?

Remember the Claude Mythos preview? Yes, the same AI model announced by Anthropic earlier this year, which sent even governments around the world into a frenzy. A model that found security holes in almost any network it was tested on, and was so powerful that it had to be kept limited within the highly regulated environment of Anthropic’s existing partners. However, it has now found its way to a large pool of users in new forms. Meet Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5.

Called “Mythos class models”, two new AI models from Anthropic were released in the Mythos Preview announced in April. More importantly, the claims are just as big, with Anthropic calling the Fable 5 “state-of-the-art in almost every benchmark tested”. So what these models are, what they bring to the table, and who will be able to access them, we’ll explore all of that here.

What is Claude Fable 5?

According to Anthropic, the Fable 5 surpasses previous Claude models in all software engineering, information work, vision, scientific research, and long-term tasks. Most notably, Anthropic says the benefits of Fable 5 increase as tasks become more complex and require critical thinking over longer periods of time.

Essentially, this means that Fable 5 is designed for workflows that involve more steps, greater amounts of information, and increased context. Examples include extensive codebase migrations, financial analysis, complex document reviews, scientific research, application screenshot generation, and other long-term context problem-solving tasks.

Instead of optimizing for short interactions only, Fable 5 is designed to maintain performance and compatibility throughout long, demanding workflows.

Legend of Claude 5 and Legends 5: Key Features

The biggest improvement with Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 is their ability to handle long, complex tasks. Anthropic claims that models are very useful for all coding, information processing, perception, memory, and scientific research. In testing, Fable 5 handled large coding projects, analyzed financial documents, interpreted charts, and rebuilt apps from screenshots.

The main difference is independence. Models can stay focused throughout a long workflow, maintain context more effectively, and solve multi-step problems with minimal supervision. Mythos 5 extends these capabilities to trusted users in areas such as cybersecurity, drug discovery, molecular biology, and genomics research.

Key skills include:

  • Advanced coding: Supports complex software engineering and long-horizon development activities.
  • Powerful knowledge function: It excels in document analysis, financial reasoning, and problem solving.
  • Enhanced vision: Understands screenshots, charts, scientific calculations, and UI layouts.
  • Long content memory: It maintains context for all major inputs and extended workflows.
  • Support for scientific research: It facilitates biology, genomics, and drug discovery in trusted access points.
  • Built-in protection: It uses additional protections in sensitive domains such as cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and modeling.

Legend of Claude 5 and Legends 5: Benchmark Performance

Anthropic’s benchmark results show Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 leading the way in many areas critical to practical AI applications, including agent coding, information processing, reasoning, tool use, cybersecurity, biology, and health.

The broad takeaway is that these models appear to be particularly robust to complex, multi-step tasks that require rigorous reasoning, broad context, and efficient use of tools.

How to access Claude 5 and Mythos 5?

Getting started with Claude Fable 5 is easy. Options include:

  • Claude API: Quickly access the model string claude-fable-5. It is also available in Enterprise plans based on usage.
  • Claude Apps: Included at no additional cost on Pro, Max, Team, and Business plans until June 22, 2026. Access is released in phases.
  • Cloud platforms: Available on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry, alongside Claude Code and Claude Platform.

Price: $10 million input tokens, $50 million output tokens. Temporarily saving offers a 90% discount on input tokens.

Note: Myth 5 covers cybersecurity and biological defenses. Flagged queries are directed to Opus 4.8 without including Fable charges, making this transparent to users.

Let’s try Claude Fable 5

Benchmarks are useful, but developers care more about whether the model accelerates real-world development. I tested Fable 5 in two tasks to test its understanding of visual input, production-ready code generation, and ability to work from existing designs.

Task 1: Recreating the Netflix interface from a Screenshot

Purpose: Measure Fable 5’s visual understanding and previous abilities.

Input: One screenshot of Netflix’s “New and Popular” page, which contains:

Recreating the Netflix interface from a screenshot | The legend of Claude 5
  • Complex navigation bar
  • Horizontally scrolling content carousels
  • Place labels on the content cards
  • Multiple content categories with different layouts
  • Dark theme style
  • Badges, labels, and overlays

Notify:

Recreate this as a working HTML/CSS page. Make it pixel accurate. No frameworks, just clean HTML and CSS. Ensure responsive behavior for desktop and mobile.

Output:

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Structural accuracy
  • Navigation bar layout
  • Netflix-style content lines
  • Reaction
  • Code quality

My review:

Legend 5 has done a great job of identifying all the important UI elements and creating a functional web page similar to what you would find on the Netflix website. He recognized that the main parts of a web page are made up of three main parts: a fixed navigation area followed by many vertical cards (ie, content) arranged horizontally.

The area that impressed me the most is how well it recognizes repeating patterns. For example, instead of treating each movie card (title card) that was rendered on the page as a single piece of content, Legend 5 used the same layout for each card, and of course, kept the style for all cards on the page.

Task 2: Transforming a Hand-Drawn Dashboard Diagram into a Modern Analysis System

Purpose: Simulate real-world workflows, turning rough sketches into a polished system.

Input: A hand drawn dashboard wireframe with:

Task 2: Transforming a Hand-Drawn Dashboard Diagram into a Modern Analysis System
  • Building instructions
  • KPI charts and cards
  • Tables and navigation features
  • Dashboard widgets

Notify:

Turn this hand-drawn dashboard into a modern SaaS analytics application. Use React, Tailwind CSS, and responsive design principles. Create polished charts, modern card layouts, subtle animations, proper spacing, and professional writing. Fill in any missing design details while preserving the layout of the drawing.

Output:

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Understanding hand drawn layout
  • An understanding of virtual governance
  • Filling in missing design elements
  • Component quality
  • Reaction
  • Overall visual presentation

My review:

Legend 5 is rendered for purpose rather than pixel copying. It produces complex structures with:

  • Sidebar navigation
  • KPI analysis cards
  • Data viewing areas
  • Management controls
  • Tables
  • Customer intelligence widgets

The model filled in the missing colors, typography, space, and interaction with creativity. A few design choices rely on additional styling that may need to be optimized for production, but the app is usable and looks the same.

The conclusion

The most notable aspect of this release isn’t just the functionality or the new capabilities—it’s how access is controlled.

Rather than unleashing its powerful models on everyone, Anthropic draws a clear line between widely available AI and limited frontier AI. Fable 5 brings much of the intelligence of the Mythos class to developers, businesses, and Claude users, while Mythos 5 remains limited to trusted partners and researchers in critical domains.

This approach shows a change in how advanced AI can be deployed in the future: not only based on capabilities, but also on risks and appropriate access. For users, Fable 5 brings robust coding, reasoning, vision, and research support. In Anthropic, Mythos 5 explores how the frontier of AI can be safely expanded without revealing capabilities that are too dangerous for society.
