The main Google May 2026 update is rolling out now

Google released the May 2026 core update today, the company announced.
This is Google’s second major update of 2026. We follow the March 2026 main update, then the March 2026 spam update and the February 2026 Discover update.
What Google says. Google has updated the Search Status Dashboard to say:
- Released major update May 2026. Release may take 2 weeks to complete.
Google wrote on LinkedIn:
- This is a general update designed to put more relevant, and satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites. The release may take up to 2 weeks to complete.
About the main updates. Major updates come out several times a year. They introduce broad, important changes to Google’s search algorithms and systems, which is why Google is announcing them.
What to do if you get hit. Google hasn’t shared new guidelines specific to the May 2026 major update. However, Google has provided some advice on what to consider if the major update negatively affects your site:
- There are no specific actions you can take to recover. A negative ranking effect may not mean that there is something wrong with your pages.
- Google has provided a list of questions to consider when your site is hit with a major update.
- You may see some recovery between major updates, but major changes usually follow another major update.
In short: write content that is useful to people, not search engines.
- “There’s nothing new or special creators need to do with this update as long as they’re creating satisfying content for people. For those who may not measure up, we highly encourage reading our helpful, reliable, human content creator help page first,” Google previously said.

Why do we care. With any major update, you often see significant changes in Google search results and rankings. These updates can improve the visibility of your site or your clients’ sites, but you may see fluctuations or declines in ranking and organic traffic. We hope this update will reward your efforts and drive more traffic and conversions.
