Postman Extends Its AI-Native Platform With Autonomous API Developer

SAN FRANCISCO – Postman, the world’s leading API platform, announced Autonomous API Engineer, a cloud AI agent that manages the full API workflow, from development, testing, and documentation to testing and CI/CD integration.

By moving API work from manual effort to automation, the Autonomous API developer fundamentally changes the economics of API development, allowing teams to move faster, improve quality, and unlock a number of previously unmaintained APIs while delivering the governance needed to deploy agent AI at scale.

As AI transforms how software is built, APIs are increasingly important as the connective tissue between applications, services, and intelligent agents. Yet many APIs remain untested, undocumented, and disconnected from governance and engineering workflows. Bottles are not tools; lack of engineering capacity. For every API that needs attention, the team must provide engineering capabilities that it often lacks. This gap includes context debt: the growing body of services, contracts, and dependencies that must be understood for any future change. If left unchecked, it becomes a fundamental driver of brittle systems.

Autonomous API Engineer

The Autonomous API Engineer addresses this gap by bringing a dedicated, always-on engineer who works with teams to build, test, document, and manage APIs across the organization. It’s powered by the Postman Context Graph, a sub-graph database that captures the full enterprise memory of how an API was built, changed, and governed over time. In this context, the Autonomous API Developer can take meaningful action throughout the API lifecycle—separating it from general-purpose agents that produce meaningful output without the context required for reliable implementation.

“AI is accelerating software production, but speed without context creates risk,” said Abhinav Asthana, founder and CEO of Postman. “Normal coding agents have the ability to write code, but reliable engineering programs need to understand how APIs connect, what they depend on, and how changes evolve across the organization. The Autonomous API Engineer brings that context, execution, and governance together so teams can measure API performance with confidence.”

Launched from a pull request, Slack, Postman CLI, or the Postman app, Autonomous API Engineer investigates a secure, sandboxed environment. It then executes tasks and returns validated artifacts—clusters, test results, insights, run logs, pull requests, and temporary cloud workspaces—that teams can quickly review and deploy.

An Autonomous API Engineer can:
● Run API and QA testing on every pull request, rotate the agent sandbox, run complete test suites, and send results back to existing developer workflows.
● Investigate API issues and accelerate root cause analysis, trace dependencies across services, proactively test APIs, and return actionable ideas for reproducibility measures.
● Test and document undocumented APIs, generating collections, OpenAPI specifications, and markup documents
● Review system designs for all services, to identify dependencies and incompatibilities based on existing API context

Autonomous API Engineer integrates easily with existing workflows, including GitHub, GitLab, Slack, CI/CD pipelines, and leading AI code assistants, allowing teams to implement autonomous API development without changing the way they work. Each one
run is fully sandboxed, credentials are securely encrypted, and scripting operations are always subject to explicit human authorization, ensuring governance and control of the business.
