Angelina Jolie had already quit acting before she broke up with Brad Pitt. He had gone into directing and was planning to focus on his humanitarian work around the world, then a divorce changed the equation.

She told Variety that returning to acting was the only way to be more at home, work on short notices, and bring in real money. He took short jobs, close to home, or those that his children could find.

Jolie also said her “fighting spirit” had finally returned after years of feeling down, and credited her children, all of whom are nearly 18, for pushing her to get going and work again. She’s promoting “Couture,” in which she plays a gruesome director dealing with breast cancer in the midst of a divorce. It’s in theaters June 26.
