Milly Alcock stepped out of The Bowery Hotel in a strapless black bra, tailored pants, and leather opera gloves before heading to the New York premiere of Supergirl.

Days before, when asked during Pride Month why fans read Kara Zor-El as an underground icon, she said that the actress “doesn’t live within the second of what we think a woman should be,” and that the film works because it “doesn’t focus on a man. It doesn’t focus on love at all, if anything.” Then came the line that took off on the Internet: “Maybe you’ll go both ways.”

He told reporters that “respectable” fans see the character that way, pointing to his idiot friends. The film, he said, relied on Kara’s emotional strength over her physical strength, and her cape was recreated using leftover material from Christopher Reeve’s 1978 Superman costume.
