Eala scores 120 points at Paribas before Miami’s comeback

FOR Alexandra “Alex” Eala, Indian Resources became a deep source of precious treasures.
The pride of Filipina tennis may have ended her debut at the “Fifth Grand Slam” with a Round of 16 exit but she carries with her valuable ranking points, a luxurious purse and valuable lessons that will serve her well in major tournaments down the road.
“I know I belong here,” said the 20-year-old, looking at his entire campaign at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) in California as a surprise success despite a failed quarterfinal bid.
“I’m leaving happy. Yes, the first feelings after the game are a hard pill to swallow but I’m at 4.th Indian Wells round and I am very happy about that. It’s something I’m really proud of. I wish it would have ended under different circumstances, but it did.”
Ms Eala, world No. 32 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, suffered a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to world No. 14 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in an abrupt end to her first match in the California desert.
Rafael Nadal Academy scholar, Ms. Eala played two of her three matches on Court 1 of the “Tennis Paradise,” the world’s second-largest tennis arena with a capacity of 16,100 near the home of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York (23,771).
And that desert became the center of good things for Ms. He dropped more than 120 ranking points to break into the Top 30 for a new career best.
From No. 32 last week, Ms. Eala rose to No.
Mrs. Eala also earned $105,720 or more than P6.3 million. But the biggest prize was the valuable learning he gained from winning and losing against the world’s biggest tennis stars.
“There will be a next time for sure,” added Mrs. Eala, who had a bye in the first round as 31.St seed before defeating world No. 52 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine and No. 4 Coco Gauff of the United States, 6-2, 2-0 (ret.) to reach the Last 16 among the stacked 96-player field.
“But my experience here means a lot. I was able to show a certain level and I really went deep. In every situation even when I lost, it’s a learning experience for me. It means a lot to have this experience although I won’t consider the game (Wednesday) as a good thing for me but at the bottom, I believe it will have a positive effect on my progress as a player.”
And that next time is very close as Mrs. Eala takes a breather before resuming her duties at the Miami Open from March 17 to 29.
It is billed as a great return for the international tennis girl, who surprised the world on the said tour in 2025 with an amazing run of four finals marked by wins in the Top 25 and Grand Slam champions as a wild card from the qualifiers.
But the stakes are high and the orders are tall for Ms. He declined this time in Florida, needing to protect his ranking points when he expires in 52 weeks or a year.
Ms. Eala came to Miami from WTA No. 140 went inside the Top 100 with 390 points last year and must repeat the semifinal finish or surpass it just to keep those points. Otherwise, a significant drop in his ranking points is revealed, not at a time when he is already lurking in the Top 20.
“That is exactly my goal,” he vowed, counting on the support of the Filipino people and in the Eastern region different from California that boasts the world’s largest population of nearly two million.
“I want to thank not only the Filipino fans but also everyone here in Indian Wells. This is a big tournament where many tennis fans will support you.”
Unlike last time as a wild card, Ms. Eala is already in the main draw for the Miami Open, his fourth consecutive trip to the 1000 level this year, and he is ready for the challenge as if he can defy all odds again. – John Bryan Ulanday
