OpenAI updates privacy policy as ads grow on ChatGPT

OpenAI is updating its privacy policy with new details on ads, data usage and upcoming features for all of its products, including ChatGPT.

Why do we care. The OpenAI update makes it clear that user privacy is a top priority: personal conversations, histories, and information are never shared with advertisers. Ads can also be personalized using anonymous engagement signals, meaning brands can reach the right audience without compromising sensitive data.

This approach allows advertisers to measure performance safely while building trust with users in a privacy-conscious environment.

Ads on ChatGPT Ads may appear to users in the free and mobile plans, while the paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education — will remain ad-free. OpenAI says ads will always be clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from chatbot responses.

The company also emphasizes that advertising will not influence the responses generated by ChatGPT.

How ad targeting works. OpenAI says that ads can be personalized using signals that reside within ChatGPT, such as ad interactions or the context of a user’s conversation. However, the company says that advertisers will not be able to access conversations, chat history, personal information or user memories.

Instead, advertisers will only receive aggregated performance metrics such as total views or clicks.

Some privacy updates The updated policy also introduces optional synchronization to help users find friends using OpenAI services. Users can choose to enable this feature or not.

OpenAI also adds new visibility into how long data is stored, how it is processed and what controls users have over it.

Safety and product changes. The policy update also refers to new tools and safeguards, including age estimation systems designed to create a safer experience for teenagers. OpenAI also adds documentation for new features and projects such as Atlas, Sora 2 and parental controls for new accounts.
