The main Google March 2026 update is rolling out now

Google has released the basic update for March 2026 today, the company announced.

This is the first major update from Google in 2026, and follows the March 2026 spam update from a few days ago. It also follows the February 2026 update of Discover.

What Google says. Google has updated the Search Status Dashboard to say:

  • “Released major update for March 2026. Release may take 2 weeks to complete..”

Google added to LinkedIn:

  • “This is a general update designed to put the best relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites. The rollout may take up to 2 weeks to complete..”

About the main updates. Major updates come out several times a year. They introduce broad, important changes to Google’s search algorithms and systems, which is why Google is announcing them.

What to do if you get hit. Google hasn’t shared any new guidance specific to the December 2025 major update. However, in the past, Google has provided advice on what to consider if a major update negatively affects your site:

  • There are no specific actions you can take to recover. A negative ranking effect may not indicate that there is anything wrong with your pages.
  • Google has provided a list of questions to consider when your site is hit with a major update.
  • Google said you may see a recovery between major updates, but the biggest change will be after another major update.

In short: write content that is useful to people and not to rank in search engines.

  • “There’s nothing new or special creators need to do with this update as long as they’re creating satisfying content for people. For those who may not measure up, we highly encourage reading our helpful, reliable, human content creator help page first,” Google previously said.

Why do we care. With any major update, we often see significant changes in Google search results and rankings. These updates can improve the visibility of your site or your clients’ sites, but some may fluctuate or even decrease rankings and organic traffic. We hope this update will reward your efforts and drive stronger traffic and conversions.
