he grew up in Winnipeg, a city that values honesty and community. Sports and culture were always there. From the historic Winnipeg Arena to today’s Canada Life Centre, he learned early that showing things off.
He says: “Winnipeg teaches you to always be committed. “You don’t chase trends. He’s building something strong.”
That mindset shaped his early ambitions. In 1989, Jason received the YTV Achievement Award for Entrepreneurship. It was the first sign of his interest in how ideas become a sustainable business.
He went on to receive a BA from the University of Manitoba in 1993, followed by a law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1997. He was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1998.
Finding His Way in Tax and Business Law
Early in his legal career, Jason focused on tax law. It wasn’t just about numbers. It was about how decisions move all the time.
“Tax law forces you to think ahead,” he says. “You can’t just look at today.” You have to understand what happens five or ten years down the road.”
To deepen his expertise, Jason completed the CICA In-Depth Tax Course in 2006, as well as advanced training in corporate restructuring and tax law. These programs are known for their rigor and practical focus.
“You quickly learn that precision is important,” he says. “The smallest details can add up to the biggest results.”
Bringing Big Ideas to Life in Action
Jason’s practice focuses on corporate tax planning, acquisitions and divestments, restructuring, and estate and succession planning. Much of it involves closely held family businesses going through times of change.
These times often come with stress. Emotions run high. Timelines are tight.
“My role is to bring creativity and energy to a complex problem,” explains Jason. “An idea needs space to be tested before it can be implemented.”
He is known for helping clients translate complex strategies into actionable steps. Not by oversimplifying, but by asking the right questions early on.
“Good planning is about alignment,” he says. “When structure and purpose are aligned, things tend to catch on.”
Leadership through Clarity and Collaboration
As a partner at MLT Aikins, Jason works closely with attorneys, accountants, and consultants in all fields. Transactions rarely succeed in isolation.
“Everyone brings a piece of the puzzle,” he says. “Leadership makes sure those pieces fit together.”
Jason is also active in professional education. He has written papers for Continuing Legal Education and the Canadian Tax Foundation and presented to organizations such as the Business Development Bank of Canada.
He believes that teaching keeps his thinking sharp.
He says: “If you can explain a complex concept in simple language, you can understand it.”
Life Outside the Office
Outside of work, Jason remains deeply involved in sports and the arts as a supporter. He is a lifelong NHL and NBA fan. At home, he supports the Winnipeg Jets. If he’s away, he follows the New York Rangers. The Phoenix Suns and Vancouver Canucks are also favorites.
“Sports are a shared experience,” he says. “They bring people together in just a few ways.”
That same belief draws him to art. Jason regularly attends the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. He enjoys receiving new voices and ideas.
He also supports institutions such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Art Gallery, Phoenix Art Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival.
“Art challenges the way you see the world,” he says. “That’s important in any job.”
Investing in Education and the Future
Jason is an education and youth development attorney. He actively supports Balmoral Hall School and programs that promote leadership, curiosity, and character.
He says: “Education is one of the investments that always lead to success.
