Kai Trump is 19 years old, headed to play golf at the University of Miami, and just walked one of the biggest red carpets in sports last night.

The ESPYs are ESPN’s annual awards show honoring the past year in sports, and Wednesday night’s event brought Simone Biles, Steph and Ayesha Curry, Jalen Brunson, Mike Tyson, Kevin Hart and Tracy Morgan to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

The President’s 19-year-old granddaughter walked the carpet in a glittering gold dress that she teased in an unboxing video days ago, dimming the dress and telling fans only that she was “in love” and had to FaceTime her mom.

Speaking to Sportico on the carpet, Kai drew a hard line about what he would and wouldn’t discuss. “To be honest, I’m not involved in politics at all. It’s just not my thing,” he said. “I like to show my health and show how you can be an athlete and still do a ton of other things.” He said the vlogs are for the next generation, to show him his progress in college and how he got here.

The only time he came close to politics was the UFC Freedom 250 card on the White House South Lawn last month, which he attended with UFC boss Dana White. “The UFC event was great,” he told Sportico, pointing to the veterans in the crowd and the America 250 lineup.

Kai also told Page Six that her mother’s boyfriend, Tiger Woods, has always given her golf advice: “Be yourself, trust the process.” He wasn’t on the carpet either.
Vanessa Trump announced her breast cancer diagnosis on Instagram in May, and posted an update in mid-June that she had spent four weeks recovering from surgery and would “soon” begin “phase two” of treatment. On the carpet, Kai told Page Six, “My mom is doing well…she’s doing better.” Vanessa was far from happy, commenting “That’s my girl” on Kai’s Instagram from the night.
