Nolan called Damon to hold it. For about 10 minutes, he offered her the main part in his next film. “I think I said, ‘Yeah,’ before I knew what we were doing,” Damon said.

Nolan threw him anyway. He told Damon it was a two-word pitch: “Odyssey.” Damon said he was shocked and excited.

Matt Damon told Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes.

The role of Odysseus. Nolan is adapting Homer’s epic as an IMAX spectacle, and it lands in theaters on July 17. Damon signed on before he knew any of that.

Making films calls the director’s way. With Nolan on the other end of the phone, it was enough to agree.

Nolan got his yes before he gave the pitch. Then he gave in anyway. Two words.
