Your AI visibility data is wrong (And right)

Let’s start with something that often makes CMOs (not to mention CFOs) very uncomfortable: none of your AI visibility data is accurate.

It is not deep. Not SeoClarity. Not Peec, not AirOps, not whatever platform you’re currently testing. The data volume numbers are estimates of probability. The levels are variable to boot. And the thing you want to know the most, is how many people saw the AI ​​feedback that mentioned your product this month, that, obviously, is unknown.

This is not a criticism of those platforms (I am a happy customer of some of them). It is a structural fact of the medium. And once you accept it, really accept it, it opens up a very possible way to use AI visibility estimation.

First, Understand Where the Data Comes From

Before you can use AI visibility data wisely, you need to understand what you’re actually looking for. Every benchmarking platform runs a data set against one or more LLMs, records whether your product was mentioned or quoted, and compiles that into a score or trend line. Where they differ is in how they measure the volume of the day. There are four broad ways to market:

Panel and survey-based estimation derives a volume of information from consumer panels or survey data. The advantage is that it tries to reflect real human behavior. Disadvantages of panel-level accuracy: a reasonable margin of error, especially in niche verticals or B2B categories where panel sizes are small.

Clickstream and traffic inference uses an anonymous browsing method to see how much query activity is happening across AI platforms. It’s useful specifically for platform-level comparisons (how does ChatGPT stack up against Gemini?) but less reliable at the individual command or topic level.

Keyword modeling goes a long way – the most common method – uses keyword research data to estimate how often a given keyword is likely to be asked in AI contexts. The concept is practical: if “best flat feet shoes” gets 40,000 monthly searches on Google, some portion of that intent is likely to come from ChatGPT or AI Mode. The problem is that the conversion factor from search volume to AI data volume is overestimated, and fails to take into account the accepted fact that people search very differently in LLMs than in Google searches.

Direct API sample it executes a fixed set of commands at a scheduled cadence and reports what it finds. It’s the most obvious way because you know exactly what’s being asked, but it doesn’t make any claims about real-world volume.

None of this is wrong. They all have real service. But there is no equivalent to Google Search Console, where the data is granular, deterministic, and tied directly to actual user behavior. The sooner you internalize that difference, the more useful your AI visualization system will be.

The Rating Problem Is Worse Than You Think

There are common criticisms of AI visibility measurement that focus on field-level uncertainty: different tools give different numbers, they don’t agree on which alerts are the most important, sentiment detection isn’t consistent. Everything is true.

But the deeper problem is not the tools. It’s in the middle.

SparkToro’s Rand Fishkin has published one of the most robust studies to date on AI feedback consistency. In almost 3,000 runs with ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI, his finding was a rough confirmation of what we all thought was happening (albeit to a very small degree): there is a chance of less than 1 in 100 that any of these AI tools will give you the same list of product recommendations in any two identical runs. Want a similar order? It’s closer to 1 in 1,000.

This means the concept of “rank”, the basic unit of traditional SEO reporting, does not translate to AI search. You are not in third place. He was mentioned in 47% of the responses in the given data set. That’s not a bad version of the level. It is a very different brand that requires a very different way of thinking.

Everyone knows that clicking on Zero. Almost No One Does Like It.

This is where the gap between understanding and doing becomes painful to watch.

Zero-click search is not a new concept, and the idea is simple enough: when you ask an AI assistant about the best accounting software to start growing, you get a reliable recommendation and you don’t open a dozen tabs to confirm. Citation links in AI answers are rarely clicked. Many people already know this.

And yet many marketing leaders step back and ask: “Why is our LLM click volume so low?” Or, worse: “This is only like 1% of organic traffic, does this really matter?”

The reason is not ignorance. It is a measurement infrastructure. We’ve spent two decades building a measurement stack designed to count clicks and connect them to results. GA4, Search Console, UTM parameters — it all takes a click. If clicks stop being the primary delivery method for influence, the entire stack needs to be reoriented, and that’s a bigger upside than updating a dashboard.

What actually happens when your product is mentioned in an AI response is something closer to a product impression than a website visit. But, it’s like a product launch on steroids: one from a very trusted and purposeful person. The user receives these comments from your position, but none from Google Analytics. However, it often shapes the set of considerations that ultimately drive a branded search, specific visit, or purchase decision.

This is the halo effect of AI. It’s real, it’s growing, and right now almost no one is measuring it well.

Intelligence Over Accounting: A Different Approach to Using Data

If you can’t trust absolute numbers, what can you trust? Trends. Competitive ratings. Directional signs. Fast level patterns. Classification of sources of quotation. All of this has real purpose in the world of actionable data – as long as you use it to generate insight and action rather than fill a reporting slide.

At Brainlabs, we call this “intelligence over accounting.” It is a willful instinct to treat AI visibility metrics the same way you would treat impression statistics or keyword ranking: numbers to be reported and compared week to week as an end in themselves.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Explore multiple data sources and look for convergence. If your seoClarity data and your Profound data tell the same guiding story about a collection of information, you’re losing ground to your competitor in every middle-of-the-funnel financial services query, that signal makes sense even if the exact numbers differ. Gathering from incomplete sources defeats false positives from one.

Prioritize what is said rather than quotes. This is in contrast to SEO audiences who are trained to care about links. Understandably, and supported by growing evidence, AI feedback has a significant impact on bottom-line product behavior: keyword search volume, direct traffic, and ultimately conversions. What is being talked about is a signal. The link is a bonus.

Learn AI metrics and traditional SEO KPIs. AI visibility data doesn’t replace live traffic analysis, it sets the scene. If your search volume is increasing while your click volume is decreasing, speaking AI is a plausible explanation. If a competitor’s domain authority is low but their share of AI citations is increasing, that tells you where the authority is changing. These are the stories that AI visibility data, intelligently read, can tell.

What Visual AI Reporting Really Looks Like

Given all of the above, here’s a practical framework for how you can plan to report reliable AI visibility around data limitations while still being realistic.

Lead with precision, not decimals. “Our level of mention in high-target financial services orders increased by 12 points quarter over quarter” is a reasonable signal. “Our talking rate is 43.7%” is not correct, because you have no reliable basis for what 43.7% means in absolute terms. Existing trends and relative comparisons, not point-in-time snapshots.

Segment for immediate purpose, not just platform. Knowing that you are mentioned more on ChatGPT than Gemini is less helpful than knowing that you appear in the top trade orders but not in the category awareness orders. The latter happens.

Create a halo effect on your frame. Even if you can’t measure it accurately yet, acknowledge it clearly in your report. Note where search volume trends correlate with periods of AI-enhanced visibility. Track direct traffic. Watch the increase in branded searches following investment in content designed to improve AI citation rates.

Report in conjunction with, not in place of, traditional metrics. AI visibility covers your measurement stack. Organic traffic, GSC data, and conversion rates are always important. AI visibility data gives you a lens into what influences those metrics at a layer above the click.

The Right Benchmark for This Time

Traditional SEO has offered marketers something unusual: a relatively clean line from query to click to result. Losing that is wrong, and the natural response is to reach for the nearest representative of that certainty, even if the representative is moving.

But the brands that will win in AI search aren’t the ones that find the most believable number to put on a dashboard. They are the ones who embrace inaccuracy, invest in strategic intelligence, and build content and distribution strategies strong enough to be seen across the full ecosystem of sources LLMs come from.

The data will be better. Measurement methods will mature. Attribution models will evolve to account for the impact of zero clicks. But for now, the obscure and active beats are accurate and always crippling.

Your AI visibility data is incorrect. Work on it anyway.
