ChatGPT gains access to Yelp reviews, ratings and photos

Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT access to real-time local recommendation data, Axios reports.

ChatGPT leverages Yelp content. ChatGPT will be able to include Yelp reviews, ratings, photos, and business information in answers to local questions. Yelp branding and links will appear when OpenAI uses its content, although OpenAI controls how that experience is presented, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman told Axios.

Yelp expands on ChatGPT. Yelp sees the value of distributing its content beyond its own locations when it benefits consumers, Stoppelman said. The OpenAI partnership adds ChatGPT to Yelp’s distribution network, with the Yelp logo and links associated with its content.

  • Yelp already licenses data to platforms including Yahoo+ and Apple Maps.
  • The agreement does not prevent Yelp from licensing its data to other AI companies.
  • Financial terms were not disclosed.

Requests for quotes are coming. Yelp Request a Quote the feature will also be available to search for local ChatGPT services, reports Axios. This feature will allow users to contact local service providers for quotes (eg, requesting consultations, scheduling appointments) directly through ChatGPT.

Why do we care. ChatGPT is becoming another place where people can find local businesses, read reviews, and take action. Yelp’s partnership with OpenAI also means that third-party data will play a big role in how AI platforms answer local queries, as local information/queries have been ChatGPT’s weakness.

Trust is still a challenge. Sixty-five percent of Americans have used AI search, but only 15% trust it “a lot,” according to a Morning Consult survey. The survey also found that 72% believe AI platforms should always identify their sources of information.

History of Yelp by Google. Yelp previously licensed content to Google before the relationship deteriorated into years of conflict over Google’s local search practices. Yelp is now suing Google, alleging that the company unfairly favors its local search results.
