YouTube and Discover’s political ad rules have been updated

Google has updated its ad requirements for YouTube and Discover Feed from April 2026 to clarify how election-related ads are handled, without changing how the rules are applied.

Why is it important. Advertisers using YouTube and Discover placements already work under strict guidelines, and election ads have historically been gray. This update is intended to clear up confusion rather than introduce new restrictions.

What’s new (and what’s not). The update clearly states that election ads are exempt from YouTube and Discover Feed ad requirements, but this is just an explanation. There are no changes to the application of the law, meaning that previously compliant advertisers should not need to adjust their approach.

Why do we care. Google clears up confusion about how election ads are handled on YouTube and Discover. Although these ads are exempt from placement-specific requirements, they must still follow Google’s ad policies. The result is clear direction, fewer approval issues, and a predictable campaign launch.

Zoom in on the image. Ads outside of election ads do not need to follow YouTube’s specific ad requirements and the Discover Feed, but are still governed by Google’s broader ad policies. To qualify for this exemption, advertisers must complete the Election Ads verification process and be verified in the location where the ad will run.

Between the lines. This is not a policy change but a documentation update. Google makes a clearer distinction between placement-specific requirements and its broader ad policy framework.

What advertisers should do. Advertisers running political campaigns should confirm their verified status and continue to follow Google Ads policies closely, as the exemption does not mean reduced processing.

Celebrate deeply. YouTube ad requirements and Discover Feed (April 2026)
