“I was trying to find the nude photos you took of me on Charlie’s set in my bedroom,” said Barrymore. “I have them,” Liu replied. “Are you doing it?” “I do, of course.”

Lucy Liu still has nude photos of Drew Barrymore that she took on the set of Charlie’s Angels, and when Barrymore asked to “borrow” them, Liu responded with a compliment. “And you look as beautiful as you do,” Liu told her. “And she’s natural and playful and having a good time.”

The exchange took place on The Drew Barrymore Show, where Liu is now a recurring guest and where the two friends slide easily between publicity mode and 25 years of inside comedy. Barrymore called Liu “my sister from another mother.” Liu summoned the soul of the great Barrymore. They met when Barrymore was producing 2000’s Charlie’s Angels, starring Alex Munday opposite him and Cameron Diaz. Liu’s interview clicked so quickly that he almost forgot he was doing an interview. “When I met Lucy, I knew I had found my sister,” Barrymore said that day.

Shooting was not one thing. “I have a series of photos of a lot of people, clothed and unclothed, guys,” said Liu, describing the entire cast of characters shot over the years.

The making of Charlie’s Angels came with its pain. Their legs had to be linked up to hold the stunt pose, and he and Barrymore climbed the fence in their heels. “Eight hours of training a day, five days a week,” Liu said of the prep, adding that he and partner Chris were dedicated while Barrymore and Diaz were “very naughty.” “I’m just a naughty girl,” Barrymore admits.

The friendship is long gone. Barrymore publicly supported Liu after her clash with Bill Murray during the first film, praising him by telling him “I don’t accept that kind of behavior from you.” When Barrymore launched his talk show in 2020, Liu and Diaz became his first guests. “I carry you both in my heart,” said Barrymore. In 2024, Liu shared the story that Barrymore turned around at the gate of her house when they broke up and hid in the bushes to avoid her ex-wife, leaving her hair behind, until Liu coaxed her inside. Last December the pair arrived dressed in khaki pants and burgundy ties, with Barrymore introducing Liu as “2/3 of a special crime-fighting team.”

Liu also looked back to Ally McBeal, who credited creator David E. Kelley with writing well for women and weekly musical guests, from Barry White to Elton John. “That show was amazing,” he said, noting that it was one of the first with a woman.

He shut down Sex and the City’s memory: the Birkin bag was so coveted that the props team kept the stunt version for practice and only pulled the original out of the safe when the cameras were rolling.
